A Suggested Academic Program
for a Major in History.

The projected course offerings are tentative and will not be finalized until the semester prior to the actual offering. The Course Source, the Official Schedule of class offerings for the next sessions is published after the fifth week of each semester prior to student enrollment/registration for upcoming classes.

On this page you will find below a Summary of requirements for the history major. and a suggested semester by semester break down. To access a particular semester click on the appropriate section of the following table.

In the suggested program below each course is labeled to show what requirement it meets.

  • * = University Graduation Requirement
  • ** = University General Education Requirement.
  • **H = General education prerequisite to the history major.
  • M = The academic major in history.
  • EM = Elective in the Major.
  • (a/m) = Advanced ancient and medieval history.
  • (m/w) = Advanced modern world history.
  • (us) = Advanced United States history.
  • S = Supporting work for BS degree.
  • *BA = Graduation requirement for BA degree.

The course requirements for the history major, 36 hours and prerequisites as follows:

  • General education requirement prerequisite to this major, 6 hours (HIS 1113, 2213.) These general education courses (marked **H) are required but not counted as hours on the academic major. Transfer students not showing credit for these courses must complete all deficiencies as a prerequisite to the history major.

  • History major (marked M), 24 hours beyond the general education requirement, including:
    • Introductory history courses, 6 hours 1123, 2223).

    • Advanced ancient & medieval world history courses, 6 hours elected from (HIS 3323, 3333, 3423, 3463, 3613, 4303, 4313, 4323, 4413, 4953 or 4993).

    • Advanced Modern world history courses, 3 hours elected from (HIS 3513, 3523, 3673, 4953 or 4993).

    • Advanced United States history courses, 6 hours elected from (HIS 3783, 3833, 3843, 3893, 4953 or 4993).

    • History electives, 3 hours from either of the above advanced categories.

  • And required political science electives (marked M), 6 hours (excluding POL 1113).

For the Bachelor of Science degree (marked S), complete either a second major or 9 hours of approved supporting work elected from other social science subjects including political science (except for POL 1113 which is counted for general education), Sociology (except either 1003 or 1013 counted for general education), and Psychology (except 1113).

Graduation requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree (marked *BA), 6-8 hours consisting of two courses from the same foreign language.

Reminder: You are required to complete the Major Field Examination in history during the last regular semester you take scheduled courses.
