Dr. Smith's doctoral specialization is in Roman history. He has degrees from SBU, The University of Utah at Salt Lake City, and the University of Missouri at Columbia. As a faculty associate, Dr. Smith taught during the Spring semester of 1999 to fill in for a faculty member on medical leave. He rejoined the department beginning in the Fall 2001 as a regular faculty member.
