Teacher Education Program
Degrees, Majors & Areas of Certification:
Approaches to Certification and Career Advancement
Students may choose one of three approaches to prepare for and grow in the teaching profession.
- Upon completion of the bachelor's degree and all other requirements for a teaching certificate, students may enter the teaching profession and follow the professional growth requirements of the employing school system, including involvement in graduate study on a part-time basis.
- Upon completion of certification and degree requirements, students may elect to pursue a fifth year of study leading to a master of science degree in education. In this case the beginning teacher may enter a school system with the advantage of having already completed study at the master's level.
- Master's Certification: A student holding a bachelor's degree without certification could pursue both a master's degree and teacher certification simultaneously.
SBU's Department of Graduate Studies in Education is offering coursework required by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for the Temporary Authorization Certification (TAC).
