Dr. Robert Brabanec

Tuesday, October 6, 2009 the Mathematics Department hosted Dr. Robert Brabenec. He has been on the mathematics faculty at Wheaton College for 45 years. He has been Executive Secretary of the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences (ACMS, http://www.acmsonline.org/) since 1977 (when the organization began under his leadership). He is currently on a sabbatical in the fall of 2009 and will be visiting 15 colleges to present lectures and lead discussions for various audiences on topics from the foundations of mathematics. These will be presented in an historical context and will include connections to Christian faith where appropriate. He spoke at College of the Ozarks on Monday, Oct. 5 and traveled to Iowa to speak there after lunch on Tuesday. In Iowa he will speak at Dordt College and Northwestern College. He spoke in Advanced Calculus and Calculus II, 9:30-10:45 on the topic of the Axiomatic Method.

 
 

He also spoke in History of Math, 11-12:15 in W126 on Cantor's Theory of the Infinite. This talk will relate the concept of the infinite to our understanding of God.
