David Gunning

Graduated in Spring 2003 with Math/CS degree.
October 2004, he reported "In March I started my job with Northrop Grumman. I am working as an Army contractor at Ft. Leavenworth , KS as a Senior Programmer. Doing some Java programming right now on a program called TACWAR. Unfortunately can’t tell you much about the job because we do classified work (DOD Secret). I will tell you we use A LOT of complex math, everything from the basics like the quadratic equation to some advanced stuff I had never even seen before. So the next time a student asks when they will ever use that stuff, hit them for me. HARD. Or maybe just sing the Pi song. And then tell them I said to pay attention. I will go ahead and give one math problem we were faced with: Given the four endpoints of any 4 sided polygon, determine if another given point would fall within that polygon. And do with the least number of steps (since this is for a computer program and you want it to do the least amount of work possible). Let your students work on that one. Hope all is well at SBU!"

Robertson Campbell

Graduated in Spring 2003 with Math/CS degree.
Reported in August, 2003 "I thought I'd give you all an update on how things have been going so far in my new job. First of all, I'm extremely happy with my decision to work at ConocoPhillips, as the opportunities seem endless! The first 6 weeks were filled with a detailed introduction to the company and the energy/oil industry in general, which was great for me since I new nothing. It really felt like I was back in class! There are a total of 8 new hires in GIS - Global Information Services, half of which were previous interns. They have treated us very well, with two trips to the Corporate Headquarters in Houston (which is a direct flight from Bartlesville on one of the company's planes), a trip to an oil field, and a tour of a refinery in Sweeney, TX. They are planning to take all of us new hires to the UK and Norway around the beginning of next year to see our largest international Corporate and GIS offices. I'm guessing a 90% chance, which solely depends on the budget (I really should have taken accounting by the way). The training/development program ended with an individual one hour presentation (to our Functional Development Supervisor, a couple of members of the GIS Leadership Team, and our new supervisor in our first position) of what we learned, and how it applies to our first position. They are very passionate about employee development. The average employee age here is 45ish due to a 10 year period in both heritage companies where there was little or no hiring due to tougher times, so the future looks very exciting and challenging.

For my first two years I will have 6 month rotations throughout different departments in Enterprise Infrastructure, which includes areas such as Server management, UNIX, security, messaging, internet/intranet/extranet development, network support, and the list goes on and on. For my first 6 months I am in the Storage Management group, and am the only one under 50! I am very fortunate because I am surrounded by such experienced people who have all kept their skills up-to-date and are constantly thinking forward. My first project is evaluating a 3'd party software package that monitors server performance, which is intended to replace a home grown COBOL program. My supervisor claims to have only written this one program in his entire career and constantly modifying it for job security. Ha ha. I'm using more UNIX commands than I ever hoped/imagined, and am utilizing the man pages and my book from Mr. Cain's Intro/Unix class almost on a daily basis. Our machines are mostly IBM AIX and Sun Solaris. I am hoping that future projects will allow me to do more coding/scripting, though."

"Since December of last year I've been working on a govt. proprietary program here at Boeing. ...It's interesting work with quite a bit of number crunching at times, so I actually do use a lot of the higher level math skills I learned at SBU. There were several times in class I can remember thinking "I'm never going to need this stuff", but sure enough, I have needed it at times."

In Feb. 2001 reported "My husband and I plan to move to Wisconsin at the end of this summer as US/C-2 missionaries. Bruce will be the director of student ministries at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. There is currently no Baptist
student work being done on that campus of 50,000 students. I have not done
much looking for a job yet, but am trying to get any contacts with the University or any junior colleges in the area. I would very much like to teach undergraduate statistics. "
