Dean’s Welcome
As you make decisions about the area of business and computer information sciences in which you want to concentrate, you should also consider some important factors about where you want to study. In fact, you might want to consider the following four factors.
First, you will want to select a University and business program that provides more than just vocational preparation. Pick a program that is well-rounded and rooted in liberal arts and sciences. Businesses today hire and promote individuals who have a broad understanding of the world and who can relate to a wide variety of clients. Likewise, you should check out the student organizations and activities that the program sponsors to develop your communication and team-building skills.
Second, make sure the University’s business programs have a respected and recognized course of study. One way to ensure this is to discover whether a University’s business programs are accredited by a nationally recognized body such as the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
A third and very important consideration is the philosophy of the faculty and the curriculum. Select a business college or program that is committed to free enterprise and service. Find a business program that is oriented toward a servant-leadership model, one that has ethics as an integral part of the curriculum. Find a program that has faculty who are committed to a worldview that embraces Judeo-Christian ideals and standards.
Fourth and finally, check out the placement rates of the business programs. See whether a program consistently places graduates into positions of employment in the field they studied.
As the Dean of the College of Business and Computer Science at SBU, I assure you that you will find small class sizes and excellent facilities and a quality program that meets each of these standards. Our programs are rooted in the liberal arts and sciences. Our student organizations, such as Students in Free Enterprise, Phi Beta Lambda, and the student Association for Computing Machinery, are consistently ranked among the best in state, regional and national competitions. On the nationally administered Major Field Assessment Test in Business, SBU graduates have been ranked in the 90th percentile during the last four testing dates, making our grads among the top 10% in the nation on business acumen. SBU is nationally accredited by the prestigious ACBSP, and we are committed through our “Psalm 15” plan, to integrating Judeo-Christian ethics and standards throughout the curriculum. Plus, our programs consistently place over 97% of graduates in their field upon graduation. And Business Reform magazine ranked SBU’s College of Business and Computer Science as one of the top ten Christian business schools in the nation in two of four categories: Top 10 Business Faculty and Top 10 Best Job Placements!*
You ought to seriously consider Southwest Baptist University’s College of Business and Computer Science. We have programs in Accounting, Business Administration, Management, Marketing, International Business, Public Relations, Economics/Finance, Computer Science, and Computer Information Science. We also offer a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.
Distinctively Christian. Deliberately free enterprise. Definitely SBU.
Sincerely,
Dr. David W. Whitlock, Dean
