KIRKSVILLE, MO. ... Taking Nebraska-Omaha down to the final wire, the Southwest Baptist University Lady Bearcats fell to the Mavericks on penalty kicks, 4-3. After playing two overtimes, the game had to be decided by penalty kicks to advance a team to the Central Regional finals.
With the loss, SBU ends a stellar run throughout the 2004 season. SBU finished with a 16-2-3 record which is the most wins in the history of the program. They also broke several individual and team records.
Ashley Munnelly put SBU 1-0 early in the first half at the 16:12 mark. She tapped in the goal after several SBU players and UNO defenders took jabs at the ball in the box off of a free kick. Munnelly finally pushed the ball in for the only SBU goal of the game. SBU played a perfect half as they held UNO to just three kicks.
UNO came out with a passion in the second half as they outshot SBU, 8-1, and muscled themselves around. They tied the game at one just three minutes into the half (47:24) when Brandi Beale scrambled the ball into the net in a mass of confusion in the box. Both teams had chances to take the lead in the second half, but could not find the net.
In the first overtime, SBU was outshot 4-0 but UNO as the Mavericks had control of the game. It was a different story in the second overtime as SBU had one shot to UNO's no shots. SBU also played most of the 10 minutes in UNO's territory but again could not find the net.
Because a winner had to be decided for the NCAA Tournament, the game was sent to penalty kicks. SBU made their first two shots and then missed their third shot. UNO nailed their first three for a 3-2 advantage. SBU tied it at three on the fourth penalty kick only to see UNO take the a 4-3 lead. SBU then missed their final penalty kick as UNO advanced.
