PITTSBURG,
Kan. - The Lady Bearcats won for only the second time on the
road during the conference season on Wednesday, completing
the sweep over Pittsburg State this year.
SBU was led by Amber Wheeler, who came off the bench to score
25 points. Gwyn Smith was the games top
rebounder with 18. Alicia Mercer added 12 points to the Lady
Cat cause Wednesday.
The Lady Cats never led in the first half, although
they tied the score four different times, including when Smith
hit a free throw with 1:22 left in the half. The Gorillas
scored 20 points in the paint during the first period.
The game was tied at 28 at the break, but SBU outscored the
Gorillas 33-24 in the second period.
SBU took over the game in the second half with 11:14 remaining
when Jenny Hancock hit two free throws to put SBU up 44-42.
They Lady Cats increased their lead to 13 when Wheeler
hit a jmper to make the score 59-46 with 2:31 left on the
clock.
PSU made just 4-of-16 shots in the final 12 minutes. SBU overpowered
the Gorillas 21-10 in those final minutes.
SBU shot .386 from the field, .375 from the arc and .647 from
the charity stripe.
The Gorillas were led by Tami Hennigh with 13 points and Katie
Spieker with 12.
SBU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 when it hosts Missouri
Western at 1:30 p.m. It will also be Senior Day.
