BOLIVAR
- The Lady Bearcats led 16-15 with 11:25 left in the first
half, but went on a 10-2 run capped off by an Amber Wheeler
jumper that put SBU up by nine with 8:54 remaining in the
first session, 26-17.
The Lady
'Cats (11-7, 5-4) went on to take the game from Truman (5-12,
1-8), 69-57.
SBU led
32-26 at the half after Natasha Goldsmith connected on the
first of two free throws with 30 seconds remaining on the
clock.
With 17:04
left in the game, Gwyn Smith hit two free throws to put SBU
up 41-28, finishing a 9-2 run.
Truman's
Sarah Sommer hit a three-pointer at the 12:27 mark to get
the Bulldogs within four points (43-39). The Lady 'Cats again
pulled away, but Truman got back within six points when Sommer
hit a jumper with 7:12 left (51-45).
From then,
it was pretty much all SBU, with the 'Cats outscoring the
Bulldogs 18-12 in the last minutes of the game. Wheeler hit
her career-high 30th point on the second of two free throws
to put the game away with 35 seconds left, 69-57.
SBU led
by 13 points on four different occasions in the last 2:41.
Wheeler
led the Lady 'Cats with 30 points and six rebounds. She hit
all four of SBU's three-pointers. Also pulling down six boards
was Gwyn Smith, who was second in scoring with 19 points.
Alicia Mercer added 11 for SBU.
SBU shot
.462 from the field (24-52), .182 from the arc (4-22) and
.708 from the charity stripe (17-24).
The .182
from the arc was dismal for the Mid-America Intercollegiate
Athletics Association's leading team in three-point percentage.
The Bulldogs
were led by Sommer with 18 points. Annie Westhoff was second
in scoring with 15 points, bu she had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Ali Long finished with 11 points on the evening.
TSU shot
.375 from the floor (24-64), .200 from the arc (3-15) and
.600 from the line (6-10).
SBU returns
to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 when it travels to Missouri
Southern for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
