The Lady Bearcats hung close for most of the first half. SBU
led 17-15 with 9:51 left, but the Griffons quickly regained
the lead. The score was 25-24 with 4:22 left, in favor of
the home team. However, MWSC used an 8-0 run to end the half
and go on top of the Lady Cats at halftime, 43-31.
The Griffons led by as much as 16 points on two different
occasions, and the closest the Lady Bearcats got was six points
with 2:17 left in the game. At that point, the fouling match
was on and MWSC hit 10 straight free throws from four
different individuals to seal the victory.
Leading SBU was Amber Wheeler and Gwyn Smith with 10 points
apiece. Smith led the team in rebounds with 10.
Wheeler was four-of-13 from the three-point arc, including
four-for-four in the last four minutes of the ballgame.
Allison Ramirez also scored in double digits. She had 17 points
on the evening.
The numbers were close as far as shooting is concerned. However,
it was rebounding that killed the Cats, who were outrebounded
43-29, including 11 offensive boards to MWSCs 38 defensive
rebounds.
SBU shot .455 from the field, .286 from the arc and .286 from
the charity stripe (2-7).
The Griffons shot .477 from the field, .308 from the arc and
.750 from the line (15-20).
SBU returns
to action on Tuesday, Jan. 25 when it hosts Truman at 5:45
p.m.
