BOLIVAR, MO. … The lights did not go out for Southwest Baptist University in the Meyer Sports Center as they shot just 28% overall and 20% from three-point range as Truman State (8-9/1-7) took a 66-54 decision. SBU took a two-point halftime lead, 29-27, and Truman came away shooting 58% in the second half and went 17-22 from the free throw line.

SBU (8-10/2-7) had a 45-42 advantage with 9:54 left in the game when Truman went on a 17-5 run over the next 7:06 to claim a nine-point lead, 59-50. This run was too much for SBU to overcome as the Bulldogs picked up their first MIAA win of the year.

Jennifer Clymore was SBU’s leading scorer with 16 points while both Gwyn Smith and Amber Wheeler added 10. Sarah Sommer led all scorers with 19 points. Both Smith and Jenny Hancock had six rebounds.

TSU ran out of the locker room and claimed a 16-4 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. SBU then answered back with a 16-2 run over five minutes to take their first lead, 20-18. SBU swapped the lead with TSU two more times before Wheeler put the Lady Bearcats up by two at the half, 29-27, when she swayed into the lane for a layup with only 00:09 left.

There were five lead changes in the first eight minutes of the second half. With 12:13 to go, TSU’s Natalie Schupbach tied the game at 41. SBU’s Hancock put the Lady Bearcats back in the lead with 11:05 left when she made a layup after an offensive rebound. TSU made one free throw at the 10:49 mark to cut the lead to one but Hancock extended SBU’s lead to three, 45-42, with 9:54 left in the game. At this point, the Bulldogs started their comeback to defeat SBU for the first-time in 11 tries.

SBU only shot 60% from the free throw line (12-20) and only made 19 baskets overall (28.8%). Truman finished shooting 53% from the floor but only hit 27% of their three-pointers. TSU also out rebounded SBU, 39-33.

The Lady Bearcats will take to the road on Saturday, January 29, when they take on Northwest Missouri State in Maryville at 1:30 p.m.

NOTES: Gwyn Smith only needs 12 rebounds to become the SBU all-time leading rebounder.
