PITTSBURG, KS. … Holding Tarleton State to just 33% from the floor and 19 first half points, Southwest Baptist University improved to 2-0 on the year with a dominating 69-47 win over the TexAnns in the 11th Annual Chatters Roundball Classic. SBU hit all 17 of their free throws in the game.
Junior Jenny Hancock had the best game of her career as she went off the charts with 28 points and 16 rebounds for her second career double-double. Both Ashley Bland and Gwyn Smith added 10 points. Before halftime, Hancock had already recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Amanda Franklin was the leading scorer for TSU with 13 points.
Tarleton State had only one lead in the game at 4-3 at the 17:10 mark when TaNesiah Lamb hit a jumper. SBU answered that shot with a 9-0 run and an eight-point lead, 12-4. TSU's Ashton Jenkins did get the lead back down to four, 12-8, but SBU slowly pulled away. With 7:40 left in the first half, Hancock gave SBU their first double-digit lead on two free throws for an 11-point lead, 21-10. A three-pointer by TSU's Amanda Franklin cut the lead to eight but once again the Lady Bearcat's offense become potent. SBU handed TSU a 13-5 run over the next seven minutes for a commanding 18-point lead, 34-16. The TexAnns did hit a three-pointer just before the end of the half to bring the SBU lead to 15.
The second half started off slow for both teams. SBU only hit one shot in the first three minutes and the TexAnns did not score their first bucket until the 15:54 mark. With 11:18 to go, Jen Turpin put SBU up by 20, 46-26, and the Lady Bearcats never let the lead slip under the 20-point mark again. Hitting her first career three-pointer at the 5:47 mark, Hancock gave SBU a 25-point lead. SBU's lead went to as large as 29 at teh 3:02 mark on a Trisha Lyons jumper.
SBU shot 45% from the floor and 30% from the three-point line. They also went 17-of-17 in free throws. After being outrebounded the night before, SBU shot back with 37 rebounds to TSU's 31. SBU also forced 20 turnovers and had five steals. TSU only shot 33% from the floor and 35% from beyond the arc.
The Lady Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday, November 23, when they travel to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst University at 7 p.m.
