EDWARDSVILLE, IL. … After cutting the lead to four, 54-50, with 2:13 to go, the Southwest Baptist University Lady Bearcats allowed Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville to end the game on an 11-5 run as the Lady Bearcats fell, 65-55. SBU only shot 29% from the floor.
Gwyn Smith recorded her second double-double of the new season with 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead both teams and was the only Lady Bearcat in double figures. In the second half, she had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead her to the double-double. Jennifer Clymore and Amber Wheeler each added nine points.
With 11 lead changes in the entire game, SBU was tied with SIUE at halftime at 26. Ashley Bland opened up the scoring with a three-pointer as SBU took a 5-3 lead early in the game. SIUE had a 4-1 run for a five-point lead but SBU shot right back with a 7-0 run to take a two-point lead, 11-9, at the 13:00 mark. With 10:37 to go, SIUE took a one-point lead on a layup by Lindy Carey only to see SBU run out to a three-point lead in the next four minutes, 21-18. Wheeler gave SBU the three-point lead on a jumper.
Carey tied the game for a fifth time with 3:14 left in the half on a three-pointer and then Annie Miller put SIUE up two just 1:30 later. SBU’s Smith tied the game at 23 at 1:29 and Trisha Lyons put SBU again by three, 26-23, with only 1:06 left in the half. SIUE made three of four free throws to end the half and SBU only took one shot in that final 1:06 as the Cougars tied the game going into halftime.
Julianne McMillian scored first in the second half to break the tie and give SIUE the advantage. At the 17:02 mark, SBU’s Jen Turpin nailed a three-pointer for another lead change as SBU took the one-point lead, 29-28. In the next minute, SBU took a four-point lead on a lay-up by Smith and a free throw by Turpin. In just over a minute, SIUE tied the game at 32 only to see Ashley Bland hit two free throws to retake the lead. With 14:12 to go in the game, SIUE tied the game at 34 and then took the lead for good on a 8-0 run in the next four minutes, 42-34.
Clymore hit her second of two free throws with 5:44 left in the game to cut SIUE’s lead to three, 46-43, but that is as close as the Lady Bearcats would come to threatening SIUE’s lead. SIUE took their largest lead of 10 with only 10 seconds left in the game for the 65-55 win.
SIUE out rebounded SBU by one, 39-38, but turned the ball over 22 times. SIUE shot 42% from both the floor and from three-point range. At one point in the game, SBU was shooting 26% from the floor.
SBU will host Ozark Christian at 5:45 on Monday, December 13, in the Meyer Sports Center.
