MARYVILLE, MO. ... Even with five players in double figures, Southwest Baptist (8-11/2-8 MIAA) could not overcome the Bearcats of the north, falling 81-67 to Northwest Missouri State (10-11/3-7 MIAA) on Saturday afternoon.
Jennifer Clymore scored nine of her 10 points in a span of three minutes that picked up SBU from an early first half deficit that eventually led to Southwest Baptist's first lead when sophomore Casey Beavers converted a three-point play with 9:02 remaining in the first half.
NWMSU used a 10-4 run to finish the half and put Northwest up 40-33 going into the half. For a while, people were starting to wonder if anybody was going to score at all throughout the game when both teams combined for 0-10 from the field. Meghan Blay of Northwest Missouri St. scored the game's first basket all the way into the game's fifth minute of play.
After being down by as many 14 points in the second half, Southwest Baptist fought back to cut the lead in half with 5:23 remaining in the game led by Amber Wheeler, who scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. That would be the closest SBU would be for the remainder of the game.
Ashley Poptanycz of Northwest scored a game high 24 points off of 10-18 from the field and grabbed a game high 13 rebounds to help eventually push NWMSU in the second half past SBU.
The Lady Cats next hit the road on Wednesday, February 2 to Kirksville, MO seeking revenge on Truman State from their game earlier last week at the Meyer Sports Center, losing 66-54.
Southwest Baptist shot 36 percent (24-65) from the field for the game, compared to their Bearcat counterparts, who shot over 47 percent (32-67) for the game. SBU was outrebounded 46-39 and shot only 26 percent from the three-point line (6-23)
NOTES: Gwyn Smith is now six rebounds away from becoming the all-time leading rebounder in SBU history. |
