BOLIVAR, MO. … Fresh off a Christmas holiday and a road trip that took SBU almost 10,000 miles around the United States, the Lady Cats opened MIAA play with their first home overtime game in almost four years.
The Lady Bearcats (8-4, 1-0 MIAA) of Northwest Missouri St. made sure this game did not end up the same way back in 2001, using a 10-1 run in the opening minutes of the extra period to give SBU (6-4, 0-1 MIAA) their second consecutive loss of the season.
Senior Gwyn Smith led all players with 22 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 assists. SBU had four players in double figures including a season high 18 points from Jennifer Clymore.
Katie O'Grady nailed down two critical three-pointers in 37 seconds when NWMSU was trailing by nine points in the second half to turn the momentum and eventually force the first overtime period for both Bearcat schools.
SBU next travels on the road to the #2 ranked team in the country, Emporia St. to ring in the new year on Sat. January 1st at 5:30 pm. The Lady Hornets are still undefeated with a 10-0 record and just recently won their conference opener dropping Missouri-Rolla 76-51.
NOTES: Northwest Missouri State outscored Southwest Baptist 47-13 on points from the bench and shot 79 percent from the free throw line to SBU's 68 percent.
