EMPORIA, KS. … Trying to knock off the #2 team in the nation was too much of a task for Southwest Baptist (6-5/0-2) as they fell to Emporia State (11-0/2-0), 68-54. ESU forced 24 turnovers for 19 points and picked up 32 points in the paint.

Gwyn Smith added her sixth double-double in 11 games as she posted 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jennifer Clymore was the leading scorer for SBU with 18 points. Michelle Stueve had 21 for ESU to lead all scorers.

SBU took a quick 4-2 lead when Jenny Miller hit a jumper just two minutes into the game. ESU answered with six straight points to take a 8-4 lead before SBU cut it back to two, 10-8, on a Gwyn Smith put back.

A 9-0 run over two minutes gave the Lady Hornets a 17-8 lead and then Tywanda Harris put ESU by 11 on a quick shot. Two free throws by Nicole Patry upped ESU’s lead to 14, 29-15, with 7:52 left in the half.

The Lady Bearcats climbed back into the game with their own 8-0 run over five minutes. Jennifer Clymore had four of the eight points. SBU cut the lead to six, 29-23, and had several chances to come closer but had four turnovers in that time span.

ESU scored the last seven points of the half as they took a 13-point lead into the half.

The Lady Hornets ran their lead to 15 points, 40-25, in the first four minutes of the second half but a three-point play by Ashley Bland put SBU only down by 12 at the 16:38 mark. Two straight buckets by Vargas-Sanchez in just over one minute had ESU up by 19, 59-40, at the 6:07 mark.

Amber Wheeler shot SBU right back down within striking distance when she nailed two straight three-pointers to make it 59-46. ESU scored the next four points and hit their final bucket from the floor at the 4:04 mark for a 63-46 advantage. SBU could not get the lead under 10 in the final four minutes as the Lady Hornets took a 68-54 win.

SBU only went 19-52 from the floor for 36.5% while ESU only hit 39% of their shots. ESU out rebounded SBU by only one, 39-38, and the Lady Hornets had five blocks.

SBU will be back in action on January 6 when they host Central Missouri State at 5:45 p.m. in the Meyer Sports Center.
