BOLIVAR, MO. ... Taking the lead in every game, the Southwest Baptist University Lady Bearcats fell short of an upset over Pittsburg State, 3-0. SBU had the lead in every match but let PSU back in the game as the Gorillas improve to 16-8/4-5 in the MIAA.

SBU started off in game one with a 9-5 lead but PSU put together a 12-2 scoring run to take the lead for good, 17-11. SBU cut the lead to three several times but could not get any closer than that as they lost game one, 30-27.

Again, in game two, the Lady Bearcats raced out to a 10-5 lead only to let PSU back in the game. SBU had leads of seven twice (14-7, 21-14) but PSU battled back to tie the game at 24. Two kills by Jenny Madrid gave SBU a two-point advantage, 26-24, but the game was tied at 26 and then 27 before PSU tallied the final three points for a 30-28 win. This was SBU's best hitting game as they had a .356 hitting percentage.

Starting out with a 7-2 advantage, PSU battled back again to cut the lead to one, 11-10, and then tie the game at 12. From that point on each team exchanged points until the game was tied at 26. PSU scored the next three points and SBU made it a two-point game, 29-27, on a PSU attacking error only to see the game end on the next play with a PSU kill.

Madrid had an outstanding game as she recorded 19 kills and Jennifer Bassett added 10 kills. Freshman Chelsea Kenney had a career-high 43 assists and Misti Baser dug 14 balls.

SBU will face non-conference opponent Bemidji State on Saturday, October 16, at 10 a.m. in the Meyer Wellness Gym.
