Former Bearcat Corey McElhaney became the head coach for SBU's track and cross country teams in May of 2007.

McElhaney is a native of Elgin, OK, and attended Coffeyville Community College, where he was a two-time all American. McElhaney transferred to SBU and was a key member of the recruiting class that started the success of the cross country and track program. He was a 5-time All-MIAA athlete at SBU.

At the time of McElhaney's hiring, SBU President, C. Pat Taylor commented that he was "excited to have Corey join the SBU coaching staff. He has been a vital part of SBU's progress. Our students and staff look forward to his proven leadership on our cross country and track & field teams."

After transferring from Coffeyville Community College in 2004, McElhaney made an immediate impact on the SBU scene, winning an MIAA title as part of the victorious 2005 indoor distance medley relay and also capturing third place finishes in both the indoor and outdoor 800m run.  He added another third place during the next indoor season and capped his career as a five-time All-MIAA honoree with a fifth place finish at the 2006 outdoor championships.  He holds SBU records in the indoor 600yd run, 4x400m relay and distance medley relay, and outdoors in the sprint medley relay.

McElhaney graduated in December 2006 with a degree in physical education. He earned academic All-American honors in 2005 in track and field.  He was also SBU's 2006 nominee for the Ken B. Jones Award, the highest honor given by the MIAA conference for scholarship, athletic achievement, and community involvement.

McElhaney exchanged wedding vows with former SBU women's track standout Christine Showler in July of 2006.  They currently live in Bolivar.
