Dear Alumni:
Thank you for taking the time to reconnect with SBU's cross country and
track and field programs. I hope that what you find on this website
makes you as excited as I am about the collective future of this
program. You have contributed to this team already by virtue of your
past endeavors. We now ask that you partner with us as we strive to
move forward as a family.
This is a very exciting time in all regards for SBU running. We have
collected the most talented recruiting class in the history of this
program, and should have the largest squad ever fielded by Southwest
Baptist for track and field. On the men's side we will add these
incredibly talented freshmen to returners such as DII All-American miler
T. Jay Sanderson and sophomore Michael Pierce, the first SBU freshman
and the second Bearcat in history to win All-South Central honors in
cross country. On the women's side, a no less-talented group of
freshmen join two-time All-South Central cross country runner senior Amy
Broadhurst for what should be a tremendous kick-off to the 2006-07
competitive season in cross country.
You will also notice a committed return to the field events this year.
I only expect this area to deepen as we add qualified coaching staff in
these areas and continue to upgrade facilities. While my competitive
career and coaching passion center around distance running, I believe
that these student-athletes are enriched by fielding a diverse and
complete track and field team.
We are being blessed in many capacities right now from many directions.
But we will only go as far as our support network can take us. This is
where you come in. If you are blessed financially enough to support
this program or feel moved to do so, of course we would appreciate and
can definitely use your help. However, there are countless other venues
through which you can show support and bring stability to the program.
Identifying possible recruits is a big help, since it is a very
difficult niche to find talented kids who not only want to run at a
Christian school, but also who fit the mold of the student-athletes we
would like representing the program in terms of character and integrity.
We need constant prayer for health, financial support, and this
university as a whole. We also need pieces of the past that we cannot
find on our own to be submitted so that we can properly credit those who
have earned honors or school records in an SBU uniform.
As you can see, nobody is unimportant in the grand scheme of things. As
it says in 1 Corinthians 12:14-20: "Now the body is not made up of one
part but of many. If the foot should say 'Because I am not a hand I do
not belong to the body,' it would not for that reason cease to be part
of the body. And if the ear should say, 'Because I am not an eye, I do
not belong to the body,' it would not for that reason cease to be part
of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of
hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of
smell be? But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one
of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where
would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body."
Whether you were an All-American or were last across the line every
time, manager or coach, or simply a friend of the program, please take a
moment to let us know where you are, what you are doing, and what SBU
track means to you. We look forward to catching up with you.
In Christ-
Jeff DeLong
