WARRENSBURG, MO... The SBU men's and women's track teams brought home 8 all-MIAA honors, one relay championship, one individual championship, and 4 school records at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held at CMSU. The men's team scored 29 points, nearly double the most in the program's indoor history. The women scored a total of 5 points, as both squads finished the team competition in 8th place.
On Friday night, the men's distance medley relay team upheld their #1 seed, winning the event in yet another national qualifying mark of 10:18.96. The conference championship relay consisted of Corey McElhaney, Terry Jones, Andy Joggerst, and T. Jay Sanderson.
Sanderson came back on Saturday to win his second consecutive MIAA indoor title in the mile run with an NCAA provisional mark of 4:15.38. He remains 9th on the national list with his 4:10.28 performance at the Tyson Invitational earlier in the month and awaits the Sunday night deadline for NCAA entries to find out if he will make the trip to Boston in two weeks for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
After qualifying for the finals of the 800m run on Friday, McElhaney also returned on Saturday to claim all-MIAA honors, finishing 3rd in the 800m run with an indoor personal best of 1:56.89.
Jones was the final men's all-conference honoree with his performance in the 60m dash. After advancing through the prelim and semi-final rounds, Jones clocked a 6.98 to finish 5th overall.
Amy Broadhurst claimed the lone SBU women's all-MIAA honor of the weekend in the mile run. She shattered by 7 seconds her own school record, finishing 6th in a time of 5:10.56.
The women's distance medley team of Broadhurst, Lisa Hicks, Alyssa Maggart, and Christine Showler finished 4th in the conference, bettering by over 13 seconds their own school record set 3 weeks ago at MSSU. Their final time converted from yards was 12:37.86, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Hicks also competed in the 600yd preliminary rounds, where she bettered her own school record by nearly a second in 1:29.89 to finish 8th overall.
Steven Cross had the final school record of the day for the Bearcats, bettering his own mark of 13.72 meters with a toss of 13.76 meters (45' 1 3/4"). That earned him a 14th place finish. Nate Wilson was SBU's only other performer in the field events, placing 13th in the long jump with a distance of 6.31 meters (20' 8 1/2").
The men's 4x400m relay of Joggerst, Sanderson, McElhaney, and Jones scored a point with their 6th place finish, bringing the stick home in 3:26.40. The women's relay of Maggart, Broadhurst, Blinzler, and Hicks finished 8th with a time of 4:20.54. In the distance events, Tom Miner ran a personal best in the 5000m of 16:17.90 to finish 16th. Jenni Doke covered the 25 lap race in 19:41.36 for 12th on the women's side. Christine Showler finished 14th in the 3000m run with a time of 10:58.72. Austin Bunn claimed 15th in the men's race with a 9:08.20, and was followed by Mike Haub, who ran 9:54.11.
Zach Porter continued to improve in the 400m with his time of 52.68, which placed him 12 overall. Nate Wilson also ran a sprint personal best, completing the 200m dash in 23.36. Adam Peery competed in the 400m and 200m, finishing in times of 55.56 and 25.86, respectively. Blinzler competed in 3 sprint preliminary races, running 8.65 in the 60m dash, 28.11 in the 200m, and 1:05.50 in the 400m. Lindsey Christie and Erika Lane competed in the 200m dash prelims, with Christie running 30.33 and Lane 31.84.
A handful of athletes will compete in the Iowa State Last Chance Qualifier in Ames, Iowa on March 5.
