May 18 , 2004
POMONA, CA. ... For the first time in nine years, Southwest Baptist University will be represented at the NCAA Division II National Track and Field Championships. Sophomore T.Jay Sanderson qualified for the meet after a last second meet at Emporia State.
Sanderson ran a 3:51.33 in the 1,500 meter run to get the automatic bid to nationals. This meet was only the fourth meet in which he ran due to his battle with pleurisy. His 3:51.33 time was his personal record and bettered his time of 3:52.82. Just last week, he won the 1,500 meter run at the MIAA Championships with a time of 3:57.58.
Last year, he provisionally qualified for the National Championships but did not get picked up for the meet. He ran a 3:52.82 last year to provisionally qualify.
The National Championship meet is from May 27-29 at Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona, California.
The last SBU runner to advance to the NCAA National Track Championships was DeWayne Miner. He competed at the indoor natoinal championships in 1994 and 1995. In 1994, he finished fourth and then was fifth in 1995. |
