Spirit Squad

Spirit Squad Tryouts

 

Friday May 2 nd 6-10 pm

Saturday May 3 rd 8 am-Noon

 

Tryouts will be held in the aerobics room at the SBU Jane and Ken Meyer Wellness Center .

 

How to become a member of the SBU Spirit Squad

 

Step 1: Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • University Application complete
  • Accepted to University
  • Paid Deposit to the Department of Admissions
  • Submitted Housing Contract
  • Enrollment appointment for Fall 2008 Semester class schedule

Step 2: Registration

Registration will include filling out an application which can be found by clicking on the link or at the front desk of the SBU Athletic Department. All applications must be received by Monday April 28 th . Please Mail to Spirit Squad Coaches 1600 University Ave Bolivar , MO 65613 , or return to the SBU Athletic Department. There is no fee for registration!

Step 3: Optional Clinic

It is highly recommended, however not mandatory that each girl comes to at least one of the following clinics prior to tryouts:

Monday April 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 8-9:30 pm

Step 4: The Selection Process

•  Attend the Mandatory Meeting –

  • We will meet in the aerobics room at 6pm on Friday, May 2.
  • Please bring proof of health insurance to this meeting!
  • Remember to eat dinner before your arrival!

 

•  Fitness Test –

Please bring appropriate tennis shoes and attire for this portion of the tryout. The fitness test is pass/fail, and you must pass all three parts in order to continue on in the selection process. The fitness test will include:

•  1 mile run within 10 minutes

•  35 crunches within 1 minute

•  20 pushups within 1 minute

 

•  Final Clinic –

The final clinic will be on Friday from 6:30-10pm. All interested candidates will learn the following:

•  SBU Fight Song

•  SBU Sideline Cheer

•  Short Sideline Dance

Girls will also have time to work on the following tryout requirements for the next day:

•  Short choreographed dance (45-60 seconds) to music of her choice

•  A variety of dance (leaps, turns, axels etc.)

•  Tumbling (highly recommended but not required for squad membership)

All those trying out should wear appropriate dance/cheer attire to the clinic. Appropriate attire would include:

•  Dance top or T shirt (please wear SBU colors – purple, white, black, gray, or silver)

•  Dance pants, capris, or shorts (black is preferred)

•  Black Jazz Tennis shoes, or white cheerleading tennis shoes (no jazz slippers please!)

 

•  Personal Interview-

During the clinic on Friday, the coaches will interview each girl. This is your time to get to know the coaches, and express your desire to be apart of the SBU Spirit Squad.

 

5) Final Tryout –

•  Practice time for final tryouts will begin at 8:00am with tryouts beginning at 10:00am on Saturday morning.

•  Please wear SBU colors, and a smile!

•  Tryouts will consist of performing in front of judges the following in this order:

•  The SBU fight song

•  SBU Sideline Cheer

•  SBU Sideline Dance

•  Choreographed Dance

•  Any dance and/or tumbling that would be beneficial to the squad.

 

•  Tabulations will be made and those making the squad will be listed on the aerobics room door at 1pm on Saturday. There will be a mandatory meeting for the new squad in the aerobics room at 1:30pm.
