Softball Coaching Staff - Christy Capner

Christy Capner, ’04, was named SBU head softball coach in July 2006. Prior to returning to her alma mater, she was an assistant coach at Valley City State University in North Dakota. Capner coached hitting and pitching while at Valley City and created and implemented their strength and conditioning program. In 2006, the Vikings finished 2nd in the Dak Conference, 1st in the Region III Tournament, and won a berth to the NAIA National Tournament. Capner coached a senior pitcher who was among the top pitchers in the country; set a school strike out record, posting 340 in 215 innings pitched; was named Region III MVP; and received Honorable Mention All-American. Capner’s pitching staff of four accumulated a team ERA of 1.68 and held their opponents to a slim .172 batting average.

Capner is a native of Winnipeg, Canada, and was a junior college transfer to SBU. During her career, she was selected as first team all-conference and first team all-region in 2000. She was selected as first team all-conference, first team all-region, and NFCA first team all-region in 2001. In 2003, she was selected as first team all-conference. Capner’s 2003 team finished 9th in the nation for team GPA. While at SBU she competed in softball and volleyball.

“We are excited to add Christy to our staff. She is in harmony with the philosophy of Southwest Baptist University, and we could not be more thrilled to have found such a well-suited candidate so quickly, who will continue recruiting and building on what Coach Snead had begun before resigning,” said Good.

Capner joined the SBU staff after returning from a commitment where she served as assistant coach of an All Star team from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, and Wisconsin. The team represented the United States in a friendship tour of Belgium.

“I am excited about accepting the head softball coach position at Southwest Baptist University,” Capner said at the time of her hiring. “I feel that Coach Cindy Snead has done a great job of turning the program around, and I feel that it’s an optimal time to be stepping into the program. I am looking forward to being back in the Bolivar area.”
