Christy Capner, '04, was named SBU head softball coach in July 2006. Prior to returning to her alma mater, she was an assistant coach at Valley City State University in North Dakota. Capner coached hitting and pitching while at Valley City and created and implemented their strength and conditioning program. In 2006, the Vikings finished 2 nd in the Dak Conference, 1 st in the Region III Tournament, and won a berth to the NAIA National Tournament. Capner coached a senior pitcher who was among the top pitchers in the country; set a school strike out record, posting 340 in 215 innings pitched; was named Region III MVP; and received Honorable Mention All-American. Capner's pitching staff of four accumulated a team ERA of 1.68 and held their opponents to a slim .172 batting average.

Capner is a native of Winnipeg, Canada, and was a junior college transfer to SBU. During her career, she was selected as first team all-conference and first team all-region in 2000. She was selected as first team all-conference, first team all-region, and NFCA first team all-region in 2001. In 2003, she was selected as first team all-conference. Capner's 2003 team finished 9th in the nation for team GPA. While at SBU she competed in softball and volleyball.

“We are excited to add Christy to our staff. She is in harmony with the philosophy of Southwest Baptist University, and we could not be more thrilled to have found such a well-suited candidate so quickly, who will continue recruiting and building on what Coach Snead had begun before resigning,” said SBU Athletic Director Brent Good.

Since Capner has taken the helm, SBU has seen steady improvement, culminating in one of the most successful seasons in the history of the program. The Bearcats' 23 wins last season were the most of any SBU squad since 1982. The offense rewrote the records books, setting new highs for the most home runs, hits, runs batted in, and stolen bases in a season.

The accomplishments of pitchers under Coach Capner have continued as well. Under her guidance, Sophomore Josie Rose threw a no-hitter, and has set the SBU record for most career strikeouts in only two seasons.

Altogether, Capner has seen six All-MIAA honors given out to her players during her time at SBU, and with the class of players returning next season, should expect even greater success.
