SBU DROPS FIRST TWO GAMES OF SEASON

February 21, 2004

[Box 1 / Box 2]

BOLIVAR, MO. … In their first action of the new era, the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (0-2) fell to Williams Woods University, 7-6 and 9-1. SBU is entering a new era of softball as Cindy Snead is in her first year as the head coach.

Game 1
WWU 7, SBU 6

Taking a 6-4 lead into the top of the seventh inning, SBU gave up a three-run homer to William Woods’ Ashley Windmiller for a 7-6 lead. The Bearcats then could not rally in the bottom of the inning as the Owls took the win.

WWU put two on the board in the first inning on Windmiller’s first home run of the game. SBU bounced right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Emilee Bounds singled in Tara Phillips for the first run of the game. After a Kyleigh Savas single to load the bases, Deanne Bolin brought all three runners home with a triple to right center field.

SBU added two more in the bottom of the second inning to make it 6-2. After the first two batters were out, Amy Marshall singled to leftfield. Cheratin Dunn stepped to the plate and smacked her first home run of the year to make it 6-2.

WWU scored two runs in the fifth inning to come within two, 6-4, and then had the rally in the top of the seventh for the win.

Bolin led SBU as she went 2-of-3 with three RBI. Dunn added two RBI and Bounds had one.

Stephanie Martin pitched a complete game for the loss. She had 14 strikeouts in seven innings of work with all seven runs earned.

Game 2
WWU 9, SBU 1

WWU came after SBU early as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning. SBU looked as if they would put themselves right back in it, but their rally was cut short. After Phillips grounded out to start the inning, Marshall walked. Dunn brought home Marshall when she doubled to right centerfield but was then thrown out a third trying to stretch her double into a triple. Bounds then popped out to finish the inning.

WWU added three more runs in the second for a 7-1 advantage and then made it 9-1 with two more runs in the fourth inning.

Tiffany Holman took the loss for SBU in her debut as she went four innings, giving up seven earned runs and recording four strikeouts. Lyndsey Fisher came in for the fifth inning and struck out two batters.

Dunn, Martin, Laura Teschner, and Bailey all had one hit for SBU as Dunn recorded the only RBI.

SBU will play in the Evangel Early Bird Tournament this weekend and then host Morningside College on Monday, February 28.
