BEARCATS TAKE ONE FROM LINCOLN

BOLIVAR, MO. … Pounding out 10 hits in game one, Southwest Baptist could not connect in game two against Lincoln University as they split the series. SBU won the first game, 7-1, while LU took the second game, 3-2. SBU is now 11-15 on the year.

Game 1
SBU 7, LU 1

Tara Phillips had two RBIs in game one to propel SBU to a victory.

SBU got on the board early as they took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Both Mary Nguyen and Tara Phillips bunted their way onto base and then Amy Marshall put a sacrifice bunt down to advance both runners to second and third. Cheratin Dunn then singled home Nguyen for the first run and then Phillips stole home when LU tried to throw out Dunn at second base.

SBU added two more runs in the fifth inning and then three in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Tara Phillips singled to centerfield to bring home two runs. In the sixth inning, Jenny Bailey doubled to right field bringing home Deanne Bolin. Bailey and Savas scored the final two runs on a LU error.

Phillips, Dunn, Savas, and Bailey all had two hits while Phillips had two RBI. Tiffany Holman picked up the win as she pitched six innings giving up only two hits, no runs, and struck out nine. Laura Teschner finished the final inning and gave up one hit and one run.

Game 2
LU 3, SBU 2

Deanne Bolin hit her third HR of the year in game two.

The bats went cold in game two as SBU could not get a hit when they needed it. SBU picked up one run in the first as they took a 1-0. Emilee Bounds singled in Nguyen for the first run of the game.

LU answered right back with two runs in the top of the second inning and one in the third for a 3-1 advantage. SBU went in order for outs in the third and fourth inning. The Bearcats had a chance to score in the fifth with two runners in scoring position with only one out, but could not get a hit to cut into LU's lead.

Bolin cut the lead to one in the sixth inning with her third homerun of the year over the right center field fence. SBU then got two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh when Phillips singled to get on base. SBU finished the inning on the next batter as Marshall fouled out to the third basemen.

Stephanie Martin took the loss in her first action in over three weeks. She went three innings giving up three runs and recording one strikeout. Lyndsey Fisher pitched the final four innings and did not give up a run.

Six SBU players each had a hit while Bounds and Bolin each recorded a RBI.

SBU will take to MIAA play as they travel to Emporia State on Friday and then take on Washburn in Topeka on Saturday, March 19.
