BEARCATS SPLIT WITH PITT STATE

March 9, 2004

Game 1 / Game 2

BOLIVAR, MO. .... In their first competition of the MIAA, non conference games, the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (5-5) split with Pittsburg State (15-6). PSU won the first game, 2-0, but SBU bounced back to win the second, 4-2.

Game One

Pittsburg State scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning for the win. SBU had a couple of opportunities to score runs early, but could not get the hit they needed. SBU left six runners on base. In both the first and fourth innings, SBU had runners in scoring position but both times they came up short.

Sara Schlagel was two-of-three with two doubles. Cara Gaskins (3-3) took the loss and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched. Cassi Haines finished up the game and had one strikeout and one hit.

Game Two

The second game proved to be better for the Bearcats as they came away with a 4-2 win. After two straight outs in the third inning, Jessica Wapotish doubled to right center field. Cheratin Dunn followed that hit with her first home run of the season over the left field fence for the 2-0 lead.

SBU then gave up two runs the next inning to PSU as the Gorillas tied the game at two. It was not until the fifth inning that SBU would take the lead and hold onto the victory. Deven Dunkin opened up the inning with a single up the middle and then stole second. Wapotish then doubled, again, to bring home Dunkin for the go ahead score, 3-2. After PSU intentionally walked Dunn, Jackie Vaughan had a sacrifice bunt to push the runners into scoring position. After another intentional walk, Lacey McGuire had a sacrifice fly to leftfield that scored Wapotish for a 4-2 advantage.

The Bearcats then held on for the win as Kyleigh Savas went the distance to improve to 1-1 on the season. She had four strikeouts while only walking one and giving up six hits.

Wapotish was the only SBU player with two hits, both doubles. She also had a RBI along with Dunn and McGuire.

SBU will travel to Oklahoma on Friday to take on Oklahoma Christian in Edmond, OK., at 2 p.m.
