ALTAMONTE
SPRINGS, Fla. No. 10 Southwest Baptist (24-6) lost
to No. 5 Barry in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight on Friday
in the second round of the Sweet Sixteen in Altamonte Springs,
Fla., 5-3.
The Bearcats started the match 3-0 after taking all three
doubles from the Bucs. Andras Bori and Mark Eori took care
of Samir MBioka and Sebastian Losavio 8-3 in the first
doubles flight. Bori and Eori are ranked No. 3 in the nation
in doubles. Dante Cipulli and Johan Nortje finished their
doubles match with an 8-4 win over Thomas Hipp and Gerold
Wiring. SBUs Peter Joos and T.J. Martin put SBU up 3-0
after outlasting Filip Norrman and Dirk Benninghaus, 9-7.
Just when it looked like SBU would make a trip to the Final
Four, Barry stormed back to take five in the singles competition.
MBioka won a hard-fought battle over Bori, 7-6 (7-5),
6-2. Cipulli almost pulled it out over Hipp, only to fall,
3-6, 7-6, 6-3. Losavio defeated Nortje, 6-4, 6-4. Norman took
out Joos, 6-2, 6-4. Weidle ended the rally with a 6-3, 6-0
defeat of SBUs Martin.
The Bearcats finished the season a 24-6 record and as the
Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association champions.
