ALTAMONTE
SPRINGS, Fla. No. 10 Southwest Baptist (24-5) extended
its winning streak to 15 and advanced to the NCAA Division
II Elite Eight on Thursday after defeating No. 30 Kutztown
in the first round of the Sweet Sixteen in Altamonte Springs,
Fla., 5-1.
The Bearcats started the match with an 8-2 win from both the
first and second flight doubles teams. Andras Bori and Mark
Eori took care of Johannes Wingerter and Velmurugan Annamalai
in the first doubles flight, 8-1. Bori and Eori are ranked
No. 3 in the nation in doubles. Dante Cipulli and Johan Nortje
finished their doubles match with an 8-3 win over Mukundan
Nandakumar and Radoslaw Hlubinski to SBU up 2-0. SBUs
Peter Joos and T.J. Martin dropped their doubles match to
Alok Bhide and Ilja Semjonovs, 3-8.
In singles, No. 40 Cipulli took a 6-2, 6-2 victory from Kutztowns
Bhide. Joos added a point to the SBU cause after defeating
Hlubinski, 6-1, 6-1. The final point came when Johan Nortje
defeated KUs Annamalai, 6-2, 6-1.
The Bearcats will face the winner of Barry and Valdosta State
on Friday, May 8 at 8 a.m. EST.
