NO. 10 SBU WINS REGIONAL

BOLIVAR – No. 10 Southwest Baptist (23-5) won the North Central Regional Tournament on Saturday, May 3 with a 5-0 win over Mid-America Intercollegiate Athetics Association foe Washburn.

“We are going to try to just keep playing one match at a time,” said SBU Head Coach John Bryant. “We don’t know our next opponent, and they don’t know us. When you get to the final 16 in the country, you better not assume anything. We know we can play with anybody in the bracket, the trick is if we can win against them. I want our team and our fans to know how hard it is to do this, and how special it is do this.”

SBU’s Dante Cipulli and Johan Nortje took the first doubles match of the morning from WU’s Rafael Valdez and Brett Coleman in the second doubles flight, 8-2. Andras Bori and Mark Eori then took an 8-2 decision from the Ichabods’ Sydney Bwalya and John Johnson. The most contested match of the day came at the No. 3 doubles slot, however, SBU’s Peter Joos and T.J. Martin defeated Tyler Kinder and Nate Hurd of Washburn, 8-6. The win put SBU up, 3-0.

In singles, Joos quickly dispersed of WU’s Kinder with a 6-1, 6-1 decision. The Bearcats sealed the victory as Bori defeated Bwalya, 6-1, 6-2.

The Bearcats will face the winner of the Kutztown/Assumption match in the first round of the Sweet Sixteen on Thursday, May 8 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The national championship game will be played on Sunday, May 11.
