For Immediate Release 28 May 2003
Southwest
Baptists Head Womens Tennis Coach, Ray Still,
has announced the signing of Melanie Cook, from Rowlette,
Texas, and Charlotte Heidelberg, from Pascagoula, Miss., to
National Letters of Intent for the 2003-04 school year.
These two are outstanding academically, both will be
receiving academic scholarships, said Still. Im
excited about having these two ladies contribute next season
not only off the court but on. They will help us reach our
goals next season, and I look for both girls to help us immediately.
Cook will graduate this spring from Rowlette High School.
She was a United States Tennis Association qualifier and was
a regional semifinalist in high school. Cook will enter SBU
as a freshman.
Melanie is excellent academically, said SBU Head
Coach Ray Still. As well as being a good player, she
has strong character.
Heidelberg has played the past two seasons for Meridian Community
College, a junior college in Meridian, Mississippi. She is
a graduate of Pascagoula (Miss.) High School. While playing
for the Lady Eagles at MCC, Heidelberg was a member of the
Academic All-America team. She also played in the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) Super Bowl held last fall in Corpus
Christi, Texas. Heidelberg took home eighth place in both
singles and doubles competition at the Texas competition.
In the latest spring National Junior College Athletic Association
Division II rankings from the ITA, Heidelberg was No. 27 in
singles action and No.9 in doubles play.
Charlotte is a very strong player, Still said.
She will have two years of eligibility remaining.
The SBU womens tennis team finished in a tie for third
place in the MIAA tournament championship. The third place
match against Truman was called off due to inclement weather.
Although, the Bearcats can take solace in an earlier 5-4 victory
over Truman in Bolivar on March 22. The Lady Bearcats won
that contest taking the No. 1, 2, 3, and 5 singles matches
and 1 and 2 doubles.
The Lady Bearcats finished the season with a 3-3 MIAA mark
and 6-14 overall with only five players on the team.
