BOLIVAR
Washburn University took its first round match of the
NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships from Northern
Colorado on Friday, May 2, 5-2.
The Ichabods took two of three doubles to go ahead 2-1. Rafael
Valdez and Brett Coleman got the first win for the Ichabods
defeating UNCs Brian Bishop and Chris Humphrey, 8-3.
The Bears tied the match with a 8-6 win in the first doubles
flight when Jim Flanigan and Matt Bong defeated Sydney Bwalya
and John Johnson of WU. Washburns Tyler Kinder and Nate
Hurd took an 8-6 decision over Adam Benshoot and Jeff Hall
to put WU in the lead.
In the singles flights, Bwalya defeated Flanigan (6-2, 6-2)
while Valdez took out Bishop (6-4, 6-4). UNCs Hall defeated
Hurd (6-3, 6-3) to pull the Bears within two. However, the
Ichabods Kinder took a 6-0, 6-4 win over Humphrey to
give Washburn the victory.
The Ichabods will play the winner of the Southwest Baptist
and Colorado School of Mines game on Saturday, May 3 at 10
