NO. 10 SBU TAKES FIRST ROUND VICTORY

BOLIVAR – No. 10 Southwest Baptist took its first round NCAA Division II North Central Regional match from Colorado School of Mines on Friday, 5-0.

“We’ve tried to just play one match at a time all year long and not get ahead of ourselves,” said SBU Head Coach John Bryant. “Right now, our focus is back on Washburn tomorrow morning. We just hope to keep it going.”

SBU’s Dante Cipulli and Johan Nortje took the first doubles match of the afternoon from CSM’s Kevin Yu and David Haddad in the second doubles flight, 8-2. Peter Joos and T.J. Martin got SBU’s second victory with an 8-4 win over Jordan Revielle and Octavia Ruiz of CSM in the third doubles flight. The Bearcats’ biggest struggle was in the No. 1 doubles flight. SBU’s Andras Bori and Mark Eori outlasted Dinuka Ranaweera and Almed Sejati, 8-5.

In singles, the top four spots were racing for the finish, however, Bori defeated Yu (6-0, 6-0) and Cipulli defeated Ranaweera (6-0, 6-1) to give SBU the victory.

The Bearcats will face the Ichabods on Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m. in a rematch of their March 29 meeting. SBU won that match, 9-0. The winner of the regional championship match will face the winner of theKutztown/Assumption match on May 8 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
