WHEELER NAMED FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN

For Immediate Release 8 April 2003

BEAVERTON, Ore. – Southwest Baptist’s Amber Wheeler has been named to the 2003 Women’s Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team.

Only 10 freshmen from around the country received the All-American status. Wheeler was the only Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association freshman to receive the award this season. Teammate, and outgoing senior, Allison Ramirez received the honor in 2000.

“Amber has proven to be a special player for us,” said SBU Head Coach Jim Middleton. “It’s rare that a freshman leads a team in scoring. We feel it’s an honor that she received this award. It’s quite an honor when you are only one of 10 freshmen in the United States to be recognized.”

Wheeler led the team with 15.7 points per game. She averaged 2.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals a game. She had a .383 three-point field goal percentage, a .427 field goal percentage and shot .840 from the charity stripe. She started 27 of 28 games played.

The 5-8 guard from Alton received the MIAA Freshman of the Year award on March 2.

Wheeler was No. 25 in the nation in three-pointers per game (2.5) and was tied for No. 2 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage in a game. She shot 85.7 percent (6-7) in a win over Harding on Dec. 14, 2002.

The freshman ended the season as the No. 6 scorer in the MIAA. She was eighth in field goal percentage, fifth in three-point field goal percentage and second in three-pointers per game.

SBU finished the season 16-12 overall, 10-8 in conference play.
