NO. 14 SBU KNOCKS OFF NO. 1 DRURY

Southwest Baptist’s men’s tennis team knocked of top-seeded Drury on Tuesday in Bolivar, 5-4.

“I’ve been saying all year I thought we’ve had a team,” said SBU Head Coach John Bryant. “We’ve been close and close and close all season long, and we finally got a victory. I’ts only April and the money is made in May. Now, I know we can play.”

The No. 14 Bearcats won two of the three doubles matches to start the contest. SBU’s Andras Bori and Mark Eori, ranked No. 5 in the nation, defeated Drury’s Jeremy Blandin and Regnier Azevedo, ranked No. 4 in the nation, 8-5. Bearcats Dante Cipulli and Johan Nortje defeated DU’s Javier Llanes and Matias Oddone, 8-0. Drury won the No. 3 doubles match. Hicham Fathi and Akos Tajta of Drury defeated SBU’s Peter Joos and T.J. Martin, 8-5.

In singles, the match came down to the No. 5 seeded singles after the two teams were tied at four points apiece. SBU’s Peter Joos defeated Younes Limam (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) to take the match for the Bearcats.

Also in singles action, SBU’s Cipulli defeated Fathi (7-6, 6-0) and Eori defeated Llanes [6-2, 7-6 (8-6)], to round out SBU’s points. Blandin defeated Bori in singles, (7-5, 6-1). Also winning for Drury in singles was Azevedo over Nortje (6-1,7-5) and Tajta over Martin (6-4, 6-2).

The Bearcats are now 12-5 on the season. Drury falls for the first time this season and is 13-1.

SBU returns to action on Saturday, April 5 when they travel to Northwest Missouri State in Maryville. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
