SPIRIT SQUAD WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

For Immediate Release 24 March 2003

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The Southwest Baptist Spirit Squad won its first-ever national championship on March 15 in the Christian Cheerleaders of America (CCA) National Championships in Winston Salem, N.C.

The Bearcat squad finished in first place in the college division of the competition.

Five women from SBU finished in second place in the open all-girl stunt division. Courtney Anding, Danielle burns, Kylie Detwiler, Megan Isringhausen and Jane Miller all competed on the all-girls team for the Bearcats.

The co-ed stunt team of Chris Bass and Kristen Jobe finished fourth in the open division on Saturday.

The open division meant anyone from any division above senior high school, could participate. The competitors did not have to represent a college or university.

SBU lost only to teams that were on staff with CCA.

The SBU stunt teams practiced outside of the regular hours the squad practiced.

“The squad did well (we missed one stunt and bobbled another), but the stunt teams did the absolute best they ever have,” said Co-Head Coach Shayla Hale. “We are extremely proud of our kids and the long hours of practice and commitment to get to this competition. We practiced/worked out an average of seven hours a week since August. Plus, we cheered at all home football and basketball games and made the trip to the MIAA tournament game. We raised about $5000 for the trip and we are very proud of our kids.”
