The Southwest
Baptist baseball team is scheduled to host four Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association games this weekend.
The Bearcats will play a conference doubleheader against Missouri-Rolla
on Friday, March 28 at 1 p.m. before hosting Pittsburg State
on Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
The Bearcats (5-15, 0-4) have enjoyed success at home thus
far this season. SBU is 5-4 at home and 0-11 on the road.
The team will host No. 13 Central Missouri State on Monday,
March 24 for its first MIAA games in Dodson Field this season.
SBU is coming off two losses at CMSU on Saturday, 28-1 and
6-5.
SBU is led this season at the plate by senior Cody Bales.
Bales is hitting .296, leads the team with 13 runs scored
and is second on the team with 16 hits. Second on the team
in hitting is Jesse Dziurawiec with a .276 batting average.
Leading the team in hits is Tyson Shields with 17. He has
a .258 average at the dish and leads the team with 12 RBI.
SBU is hitting .225 from the plate as a team this season.
Leading the Bearcat pitching staff in 2003 is Tanner Rust.
Rust (1-2) has a 2.39 ERA and leads the team with 24 strikeouts
in 26.1 innings of work. He has allowed only seven earned
runs. Opponents are batting .219 off of Rust. Second on the
team in ERA is Shields with a 6.00. He has seen three innings
of action.
The Bearcats team ERA is 8.32 while their opponents
ERA is 4.09.
The Missouri-Rolla Miners enter the week with a 6-4 overall
record and are 1-3 in MIAA play. The team is scheduled to
host Missouri Southern on Wednesday, March 26 for a MIAA doubleheader.
The Miners dropped two games to CMSU on Sunday, 6-3 and 13-2.
Leading UMR this season is Bill Gregory with a .571 batting
average. He is followed by Eric Cummins (.469), James Brandt
(.429) and Vince Sanvi (.400). Cummins and Sanvi lead the
team with 11 RBI apiece. Cummins leads the team with 15 runs.
The team is averaging .317 at the plate.
Leading the Miners on the mound is Michael Bell who has a
0.00 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched. The team has a 3.76 ERA.
Pittsburg State enters the week with a 15-7 overall record
and a 0-2 MIAA record. The Gorillas are scheduled to play
Sioux Falls (S.D.) on Monday at 3 p.m. That doubleheader will
be PSUs only action until Saturdays matchup in
Bolivar.
The Gorillas are coming off two MIAA losses at the hands of
Missouri Southern on Sunday. PSU lost 11-2 and 6-2.
Justin Hamilton leads the Gorillas this season with a .429
batting average. Second on the team is Beau Schultz with a
.381 hitting percentage. Dan Walters (.355) leads the team
with 27 hits and 23 runs. Grant Polk (.373) leads PSU with
26 RBI and three homeruns. The team is hitting .331.
The Gorillas are led on the mound by Derek Smith. He has seen
action in only seven innings, but he has a 0.00 ERA. Second
on the team is Jason Clemsenson (5-1). He has a 2.25 ERA and
has seen action in 40.0 innings of play this season. Paul
Sweeney (2-3, 5.88) leads the team with 25 strikeouts. The
Gorillas have a team ERA of 4.84.
