SBU TO FACE TWO TOP 11 TEAMS

JOPLIN and SPRINGFIELD – Southwest Baptist’s men’s tennis team will travel to Joplin to face No. 11 Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, March 1 at 9 a.m. at the Millenium Tennis Center. The Bearcats will then play No. 1 Drury on Sunday, March 1 at 3 p.m. in Springfield at the Cooper Tennis Center.

No. 13 SBU is coming off a 6-3 win over Oral Roberts last Saturday. The win over the NCAA Division I member put SBU at 3-1 this season.

The Bearcats’ first and second seeded doubles claimed victories on Saturday over ORU. Andras Bori and Mark Eori paired up for a 8-1 victory over Jared Welch and Matt Munson to stretch their undefeated record this spring to 4-0.

They are ranked No. 1 in the nation. Dante Cipulli and Johan Nortje defeated ORU’s Chris Moore and Wessel Kemp, 8-3. They are 4-0 so far this season as well. SBU lost the third seed doubles to Eddie Paez and Kevin Garlington, 8-3. SBU’s Peter Joos and T.J. Martin were on the losing end of the match.

The SBU singles were successful, wining four of the six matches. The first four Bearcat seeds won. Bori defeated Welch, 6-4, 6-2. Bori is ranked No. 3 in the nation in singles. Cipulli defeated Moore, 6-0, 6-1. Eori defeated Munson, 6-1, 6-2 and is ranked No. 19 in the nation in singles. Johan Nortje defeated Paez, 7-6, 6-4. Joos lost to Garlington, 7-5, 6-1, and Martin dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Kemp Saturday.

The Bearcats only loss this season came at the hands of Ouachita Baptist on Feb. 15. SBU lost in Arkadelphia, 7-2. The Bearcats won the first two seeds of the doubles matchups. Bori/Eori defeated Guillaume Coubard and Tjeerd Star, 8-6. Nortje and Cipulli defeated Andre Edwall and Pierre Perez, 8-4. OBU took the rest of the matches. Coubard defeated Bori 6-4, 6-0, for his only loss this season. The No. 11 Tigers enter the weekend with a 3-1 record.

OBU leads the all-times series, 11-7.

No. 1 Drury enters the weekend with a 2-0 record after defeating Ouachita Baptist 6-3 on Feb. 14 and Delta State 9-0 on Feb. 15. This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the Bearcats and the Panthers this season. The second meeting will be on April 1 in Bolivar at 3:30 p.m.

SBU leads the all-time series against Drury, 39-8.

“We’re 3-1, snowbound and trying to get as match-tough as we can,” said SBU Head Coach John Bryant. “We’re starting to get into good physical condition and by playing Ouachita Baptist, Drury and Oral Roberts, no one will scare us.”
