For Immediate Release 25 February 2002
OVERLAND
PARK, Kan. Southwest Baptist Universitys
mens basketball team had their four wins returned to
them after a 6-4 vote overturned the previous ruling Sunday.
SBU is now 9-15 overall, 5-11 in conference play.
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associations
10 faculty athletics representatives met Sunday (Feb. 23)
to hear appeals from three conference-member schools about
forfeitures by SBUs squad for use of an ineligible player.
On Feb. 10, MIAA commissioner Ralph McFillen changed the conference
standings to reflect the four forfeits by SBU, giving wins
to the four teams SBU had defeated with the ineligible player.
The groups vote on Sunday returned the wins to SBU,
however, the Bearcats must vacate the wins. With that, the
team moves to the bottom of the conference standings and is
ineligible for the 2003 Sonic Championships in March.
In turn, the records of the schools involved will reflect
on-court results for purposes of seeding the conference tournament
which begins on March 7 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas
City.
The three schools which appealed the initial ruling were Missouri
Western, Northwest Missouri State and Washburn.
