For Immediate Release 21 February 2002
The Southwest
Baptist women's tennis team signed three players during the
winter break that will compete for the Lady Bearcats right
away. The three arrivals are freshmen Iza Ferreira, Lynn Klaasen
and Bobbie Zawislak.
Iza Ferreira, a native of Florianopolis, Brazil, was No. 5
in Brazil singles competition and won a National Championship
in doubles.
Iza is the best we've had in years, said SBU Head
Coach Ray Still. She is the kind of player we can build
our program around.
In her first match against Zorana Stefanovic, an All-American
from Northeastern (Okla.) State, Iza pushed and showed
a fighting spirit before falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Iza is the strongest, most fit player that I've coached,
Still said. She is an aggressive player and likes to
finish shots off by coming to the net.
Lynne Klaasen hails from Kuils River, South Africa. She comes
to SBU from a successful tennis playing family.
Lynne has a brother on the Association of Tennis Professionals
and had a father that played nationally as well. Klaasen was
one of the top players in the Cape Town, South Africa region.
Lynne is one of our hardest workers and has a lot of
potential, Still said. She will be a solid player
for us. She is a baseline grinder with a strong backcourt
game. Lynne is a very competitive individual that stays positive
and always has an intense focus.
Bobbi Zawislak comes to SBU after taking an early out from
School of the Osage High School. The Lake of the Ozarks product
was captain of her high school team and is a nationally-ranked
United States Tennis Association junior player in the Missouri
Valley region.
The extensive experience that Bobbi brings will be a
valuable asset to our team, Still said.
Zawislak is in the top 15 percent of her graduating class
and has nine hours of college credit that transferred toward
her anticipated degree.
The commitment Bobbi has made to academics shows the
type of student-athlete she is.
