MEN'S TENNIS ON ROAD THIS WEEKEND

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Southwest Baptist University’s men’s tennis team will face two nationally-ranked teams this weekend in Arkadelphia, Ark. The No. 13 SBU will face No. 32 Delta State on Friday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. before squaring off against No. 11 Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 15 at noon.

“You improve by playing quality opponents and February and march are the months to do homework,” said SBU Head Coach John Bryant. “Barring injuries, I think we’ll have a very good team in April.”

The Bearcats won their first match of the season on Feb. 1 when they defeated Washington University 7-2 in St. Louis. Washington is ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III.

SBU is led by No. 3 singles player Andras Bori, who took care of WU’s Brian Alvo, 6-4, 6-4 in the first match of the season. Alvo was ranked No. 15 in the nation in Division III.

The SBU duo of Bori and Mark Eori are ranked No. 1 in the nation in Division II and defeated Washington’s Neil Kenner and Ari Rosenthal, 8-2. The WU duo is ranked No. 6 in Division III.

Bori is ranked No. 19 in singles.

The Bearcats are ranked No. 1 as a team in the North Central region. Bori and Eori are No. 1in doubles while the duo is No. 1 and No. 2 in singles, respectively. Also ranked in the regional poll is Johan Nortje (No. 7) and Peter Joos (No. 8). Joos and Nortje are ranked No. 8 in the region as a doubles team.

Delta State, No. 32 in Division II, is scheduled to play No. 1 Drury in Arkadelphia, Ark. on Friday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. The Statesmen do not have any singles or doubles ranked in the national ranking, however, the team is ranked in the South region at No. 4. Julien Hugnon is ranked No. 8 in the region.

Ouachita Baptist’s Gilles Lagardere is ranked No. 6 in the nation in singles. Lagardere and his doubles partner, Pierre Perez, are ranked No. 17 in Division II. OBU is ranked No. 3 in the South region. Lagardere is ranked No. 1 in the regional poll in singles and Andre Edwall is ranked No. 9 in singles. Lagardere and Pierre Perez are ranked No. 4 in the region in doubles.

The Tigers are 2-0 after defeating Oklahoma Christian, 8-1, and Tyler Junior College, 6-3, on Saturday, Feb. 8 at home.

Delta State and Ouachita Baptist are both members of the Gulf South Conference.
