LADY BEARCATS TO trAVEL TO DISNEY

Southwest Baptist’s women’s basketball team will travel to Orlando, Fla. to take part in the Disney Holiday Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 17-18. The women will play Minnesota State-Mankato at 1 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Dec. 17 and Indianapolis at 9 a.m. EST on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The Lady Bearcats are coming off a 74-53 victory over Harding Saturday.

The Lady Bearcats wasted no time Saturday defending their home floor and jumped out to a 22-11 lead over Harding in the first 7:43. SBU went on to win the game 74-53.

SBU led 40-29 at the half and then outscored their opponents 34-24 in the second period.

The Lady 'Cats were led by Amber Wheeler with 25 points. The freshman was two three-pointers shy of tying a school record of eight threes in a game set by Kim Francis on Nov. 19, 1993 against Missouri Baptist.

Also scoring in double digits for SBU was Gwyn Smith (13) and Alicia Mercer (10). Smith had a double-double on the evening after pulling down 14 rebounds.

The Lady 'Cats hit 31-62 shots from the field (.500), eight of 14 attempts from the three-point arc (.571), and only four of 14 throws from the charity stripe (.286).


Wheeler leads the Lady ‘Cats in scoring this season. The freshman is averaging 16.3 points per game. Davis is second on the team in points with 12.4 points per game. Also averaging in double figures for SBU are Alicia Mercer (10.4) and Gwyn Smith (10.4). Smith leads the team with 8.9 rebounds per game.

SBU is averaging .456 from the field, .439 from the arc and .644 from the line this season.

Minnesota State-Mankato enters the game with a 3-4 record. lost to Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, 93-86, in overtime. The Mavericks trailed by as many as 16 points in the game but battled back with 46 points in the second half. However, they were unsuccessful in taking the game on the road.

This season, the Mavericks are led by Lindsay Happ with 15.0 points per game. Also averaging in double figures for Mankato is Hannah Stolba (11.5), Susan Slonek (11.5) and Kris Wolle (11.5). Stolba leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per outing. Arin Andrews is second in rebounds with 6.3 per game.

The Mavericks are averaging .377 from the field, 346 from the arc and .745 from the line.

This is the first meeting between Mankato and SBU.

Indianapolis enters the Classic with a 6-1 record. They will face Ouachita Baptist in Orland, Fla. on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 9 a.m. EST.

IU is coming off a 70-54 win at Oakland City on Saturday. They trailed at the half, 31-26, but outscored their opponents 44-23 in the second half. Sophomore Amy Wisser led Indianapolis with a game-high 16 points in 21 minutes off the bench.

The Greyhounds are led by Erin Moran with 17.0 points per game and Kristen Lowry with 14.0 points per game. Lowry also leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per outing. She also has 11 blocks in just seven games.

Their first victory of the season came against Central Missouri State on Nov. 23, 71-65. The Greyhounds are currently on a three-game winning streak.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
