MEN 'S TENNIS RANKED IN NATIONAL POLL

For Immediate Release 2 December 2002

Southwest Baptist’s men’s doubles team of Andras Bori and Mark Eori are No. 1 in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Bori and Eori captured the the Division II men's doubles title in October at the Omni Hotels National Small College Tennis Championships at the H.E.B. Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Bori and Eori beat Ferris State's (Mich.) Jason Cole and Jan Talian 8-2 to capture the title.

Bori is ranked No. 3 nationally in singles. He finished in third place at the national tournament in October.

“We were expecting our No. 1 doubles team and our No. 3 singles player to be ranked respectively since that is the way the national tournament rounded out,” said SBU Head Coach John Bryant.

Also ranked in the top singles was Mark Eori at No. 19.

The SBU men’s team is ranked No. 13 in the nation in the newly released poll.

SBU is ranked No. 1 in the team rankings for the North Central Region. Both Bori and Eori are No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in the singles rankings. Johan Nortje is ranked No. 7 and Peter Joos is ranked No. 8 in the region.

In doubles, the Eori/Bori duo is ranked No.1 with the duo of Joos/Nortje at No. 8 in the region.

“I was expecting to be ranked No. 1 in doubles and to have top honors in singles,” Bryant said. “We did well both individually and as a team at the ITA Regional.”

The rankings do not reflect the entire SBU lineup for the spring. Dante Cipulli will be eligible for competition in the spring of 2003 and could be at the top of the Bearcat lineup.

“The national and regional rankings don’t reflect Dante in our lineup,” Bryant said. “Come February, I would expect us to be somewhere in the 5-6 range as a team. In reality, Dante should come in in the top 10 in February when he starts in, and there is no reason Mark Eori isn’t in the top 10, besides them not wanting to put three guys from the same school in the top 10. All three are very capable of being there.”

SBU will begin its season at No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis at 6 p.m.

“The rankings are just for public relations,” Bryant said. “Starting Feb. 1 we are into reality check. I feel good about where we are viewed nationally. It shows we have earned some respect, and it will be time to get it after it come February.”
