Eight Southwest
Baptist Bearcats were named to the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate
Athletics Association Football Team. Both Marc Green and Shawn
Linder were named Second Team members.
Six members of the 2002 Bearcat football squad were named
to the All-MIAA Honorable Mention list. Those Bearcats were
wide receiver Kevin Whitley, a 5-7 senior from Crowley, Texas;
John Long, a 6-4 senior offensive lineman from Commerce, Okla.;
Tommy Brown, a 6-1 junior offensive lineman fro Savannah,
Ga.; Eric Acree, a 6-4 junior defensive lineman from Seminole,
Okla.; Donald Williams, a 6-1 sophomore defensive back from
Thomason, Ga.; and Ulexis Williams, a 5-10 sophomore defensive
back from Springfield.
Green, a 6-2 junior wide receiver from Rockwall, Texas, finished
the season with 85 receptions for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns.
He averaged 92.2 yards per outing and 11.9 yards per catch.
Green was second in the conference in yards per game and receptions
per game (7.73). This is the second straight season Green
has been named Second Team All-MIAA.
Linder finished the season with 22 solo and 31 assisted tackles.
The 6-2 senior defensive lineman from Wrightville, Ga. had
seven tackles for a loss of 17 yards, including one sack for
10 yards. He also recovered one fumble. This is the second
straight season Linder has been named Second Team All-MIAA.
He was also named All-MIAA Honorable Mention in 2000.
Whitley finished the season second on the team in receptions
with 52. He had 550 yards and two touchdowns. This is Whitleys
second straight season being named honorable mention.
Acree finished the season with 16 solo and 27 assisted tackles,
including five tackles for a loss of 13 yards. He had one
sack for five yards and three pass breakups this season.
Donald Williams led the team in tackles in 2002 with 43 solo
and 43 assisted tackles. He had 16 tackles for a loss of 55
yards, including three sacks for 21 yards. He also had two
forced fumbles, three pass breakups and an interception.
Ulexis Williams had 27 solo and 17 assisted tackles in 2002.
He recorded three for a loss of 11 yards. Williams had 11
pass breakups, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles.
He was tied for the conference lead with six interceptions,
and he returned those interceptions for a total of 56 yards.
This is the third straight season that SBU has had eight or
more members of the football team honored by conference coaches
on the All-MIAA teams.
