EASTERLY, McCULLAH HONORED WITH BEARCAT ATHLETICS' HIGHEST HONOR

Southwest Baptist announced the 2000-01 winners of the Rex Brown Award for Excellence. Seniors Erin Easterly and Clayton McCullah were awarded the athletics department's highest honor named after the former athletic director, Rex Brown.

To receive the award, winners must display strong character, academic achievement, leadership qualities and dedication to his/her sport. The award is given to both a male and female student-athlete who is a senior in athletic eligibility.

"Each year we look forward to giving this award because it exemplifies the type of student-athlete we have at SBU," said Joanne W. Vaughan, assistant athletics director and senior women's administrator at SBU, said. "Many student-athletes were nominated, but Erin and Clayton meet all four criteria."

Easterly, a senior from Fair Grove, was a four-year letterwinner of the women’s basketball team. Easterly started almost every game the last two seasons and finished her career at SBU fifth in total career rebounds (678), fifth in total career games played (111), second in career free throws made (353) and third in career free throws attempted (462). Easterly also holds the single season record for free throws made (156, 2001-02) and infree throws attempted (189, 2001-02). She is fourth on the single season totals in points after scoring 451 duringthe 2001-02 season. Easterly has been a member of the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll for the last two years, was named All-MIAA First Team in 2001-02 and All-MIAA Honorable Mention in 2000-01. She was named MIAA Player of the Week on Feb. 18, 2002. Easterly will graduate in May 2002 with a bachelor’s degreein business administration.

Clayton MccCullhah
McCullah

McCullah, a senior from Aurora, led the 2001 football team to a 6-5 record, the
first winning season for the Bearcat football program in 10 years. McCullah
was named All-MIAA Honorable Mention in 2001 and 2000, and was the center of the 2001 football team that allowed only three sacks. That wasthe lowest total allowed in the conference. McCullah also made the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll in 2001 and 2000. He was also ateam captain in 2001. McCullah will graduate in December of 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology.

McCullah will begin teaching and coaching in Greenfield in the fall. He and his wife, Amanda, have been married for one year.
