For Immediate Release 10 April 2002
Southwest
Baptist University Head Soccer Coach Peter McGovern inked
three more players to National Letters-of-Intent for his first
recruiting class at SBU.
Chelsey Klaasen from Olathe, Kan., Rachel Mayer from St. Louis
and Jacquelyn Gassner from Fenton (St. Louis) all signed on
to play for the Bearcats.
All three players bring intelligence to us, McGovern
said. These girls are solid students who are intense
and will be integral to our future success.
Klaasen is a fullback for Olathe East High School.
I am delighted that Chelsey has chosen to play for us,
McGovern said. She plays in the prestigious Kansas City
area and that will benefit her in adapting to the college
game.
Gassner, from Rockwood Summit High School, is a defender/sweeper.
She has played four years on the Busch Soccer Club, one year
for the Liebe Soccer Club and helped lead her high school
team to a second place finish in 4A last season. Summit finished
last season with a 24-4-1 record. Gassner took one shot and
that was her lone goal for the wwws. She was the MVP of
the freshman team in 1998-99 and has been a scholar-athlete
all three years of high school. She is involved in coaching
soccer as well as being a gymnastics instructor to preschool
children.
I am happy to have a such a high quality student-athlete
sign with us, McGovern said. She is a National
Honor Society member and is a pretty good soccer player, too.
Jacquelyn has played since kindergarten and plays for the
ultra-competitive Busch Soccer Club. I look forward to having
her on the field for us.
Mayer is a sweeper from Tower Grove Christian High School
in St. Louis. Last season, she recorded one assist for the
Tigers. She has played on the varsity team since seventh grade
and has played two years in an indoor soccer league in St.
Louis. Mayer was also on the basketball, volleyball and track
teams throughout high school. She averaged 1.7 points-per-game
and 2.3 rebounds during her four years of basketball. Rachel
had a 88.01 serve percentage, averaged about an ace per game
(0.54) and 2.05 kills per game her junior and senior seasons.
Mayer played soccer with current Bearcat Nicki White. Mayer
also runs track.
Rachel comes to us from a program with great tradition,
McGovern said. She is fundamentally sound and a welcome
addition to our blossoming soccer program.
McGovern hopes the addition of these three individuals will
contribute to the success of SBU soccer.
These three will give us added depth, McGovern
said. "I look forward to helping them reach their
full soccer playing potential while they are at SBU.
SBU soccer is set to begin the 2002 season on Friday, August
30 against Winona State University in Winona, Minn., at 11:00
a.m. The home debut of Lady Bearcat soccer will be Saturday,
October 5 in a MIAA match against Truman at noon.
