FT. MYERS, FL. ... Taking another step towards a national championship, both Dante Cipulli and Johan Nortje won their matches in the first day of the ITA National Championship. Cipulli was the national singles runner-up last year.
Cipulli won his first round match against Stefan Dumitrescu from USC-Upstate, 6-3, 6-3. He will now take on Tomas Hladil from Central Oklahoma. If he wins that match, he will face the winner of Joep Epkey (Southern Indiana)/Eduardo Rincon (Valdosta State) match in the finals on Saturday.
SBU continued their winning ways in the doubles tournament as they defeated Kyle Dougherty/Brian Bogus (Bloomsburg), 6-4, 6-2. They will now face Robert Jendelund/Dale White from Armstrong Atlantic.
Cipulli and Edward Rincon are the only two men’s tennis players left that are playing both in the singles and doubles tournament. Rincon, from Valdosta State, also won his first round singles and doubles match.
