BOLIVAR, MO. ... The NCAA Division II national rankings have been released and the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats are #6 nationally. Dante Cipulli and Andras Bori are also ranked in the top 10 nationally while Bori/Eori are in the top five in doubles.
Last year, the Bearcats finished #9 in the nation. The #6 ranking is the best ranking they have had since the 1995 season. Their highest ranking came in the 1990 season when they finished #4 in the nation. With the #6 ranking, SBU has been given the #1 ranking in the North Central Region. Behind SBU are fellow MIAA teams in #2 NW Missouri State and #3 Washburn.
Nationally in singles, Dante Cipulli is ranked #4 and Andras Bori #8. SBU and West Florida are the only two universities that have two athletes ranked in the top 10. Cipulli finished as the NCAA Division II national runner-up at the ITA singles this past fall. He defeated teammate Andras Bori in the regional finals to advance to the national tournament. Johan Nortje is ranked #18 in the nation. In the North Central Region, Cipulli, Bori, and Mark Eori are #1, #2, and #3.
In doubles rankings, Bori/Eori were tabbed #4 in the nation while Cipulli/Nortje are #18 in the nation. In the North Central Region, SBU once again has the #1 and #2 spots. Bori/Eori are the #1 team while Cipulli/Nortje are #2. Bori/Eori were the 2002 NCAA Division II national champions and finished third this past fall.
SBU will start their season on February 7th when they travel to St. Louis to take on Washington University.
