#13 BEARCATS CLAIM SECOND StrAIGHT MIAA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
HAVE WON 12 MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 17 YEARS
April 25, 2004 TOPEKA, KAN. ... The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats keep making history in the MIAA as they won their 12th MIAA men’s tennis championship with a 5-2 win over Washburn University. It is the second consecutive season that the Bearcats have claimed the crown.
SBU won the MIAA Championship seven-times in a row from 1988 through 1994 and then had a three-peat from 1998 through 2000. Last year was the first MIAA Championship won for SBU since the 2000 season.
SBU took the first two doubles matches before dropping the #3 match, 8-2. SBU then claimed wins in the singles spots of #1, #2, and #4 before fallling at the #6 position. Two of the matches were not completed.
Winning in the doubles matches were Andras Bori/Mark Eori and Dante Cipulli/Johan Nortje. Claiming wins in the singles matches were Cipulli, Eori, and Nortje.
The Bearcats will now host the NCAA Regional on May 7-8. The winner of the regional will advance to the NCAA Tournament in Orlando, Florida.
