SBU PUTS FIVE PLAYERS ON ALL-MIAA FIRST TEAM
CIPULLI NAMED THE MVP; BRYANT PICKS UP COACH OF THE YEAR
WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER HICKEL GIVEN SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
May 2, 2004 OVERLAND PARK, KAN. ... Picking up more MIAA awards after the MIAA Tennis Championship, the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats had five players selected to the All-MIAA First-Team along with the MVP. It is the second year in a row that SBU has been given the MVP.
Junior Dante Cipulli, ranked #2 in the nation at singles, was voted as the MIAA MVP. Last year, Andras Bori was given the award. Cipulli, Andras Bori, and Mark Eori were unanimously selected to the first team. Cipulli was selected at first singles and second doubles, Bori at third singles and first doubles, and Eori at second singles and first doubles. Also being voted onto the First Team was Peter Joos and Johan Nortje. Joos was at fifth singles and Nortje at second doubles.
SBU also had three selections to the second team. Joos and Nortje along with Brian Harrelson added their names to that list. Joos and Harrelson were honored at third doubles and Nortje at fourth singles.
For the second year in a row, head coach John Bryant was given the MIAA “Coach of the Year" award. He will share the award with Washburn coach Jennifer Hastert.
The Bearcats will continue play on May 7 when they host the NCAA Division II North Central Regional at the John Bryant Tennnis Center on the campus of Southwest Baptist University.
On the women’s side of tennis, SBU senior Lindsay Hickel was the lone representative from SBU. She was awarded the MIAA Sportsmanship award for her actions in the 2003-04 year.
