TOPEKA, KS. ...After containing Washburn star forward Travis Robbins for the first half, the Ichabods (14-4, 5-2 MIAA) finally found a way to awaken their preseason all-american and rally from a nine-point deficit in the second half to defeat Southwest Baptist (8-8, 2-5 MIAA) 73-64.
With 12:28 remaining in the game and SBU leading by nine points, Robbins scored eight of his game high 15 points in a crucial four minute stretch that pushed the Ichabods ahead of the Bearcats. Southwest Baptist could not find an answer in time before Washburn iced the game down the stretch.
In what wasn't the prettiest of basketball games with a combined 26 turnovers from both teams just in the first half alone, SBU found themselves ahead 32-26 going into the half and holding WU to a dismal 18% from the three-point line. The Bearcats held Travis Robbins to only three points in the first half.
However, the nation's leading three-point shooting team could not find a way to shake off their recent shooting woes, connecting for only 23% (9-38) from the three-point line, 37% (23-62) from the field, and 53% (9-17) from the free throw line.
Senior Cedric Ousley knocked down four treys for a team high 12 points. Now Ousley has made 43 shots on the entire season and 41 of them have been from behind the three-point area. Sheldon Pace finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists. This was only the fourth game all season that Pace did not collect at least one steal.
Up next for the Bearcats is a trip up to St. Joseph's, MO to face a streaking Missouri Western squad that just recently upset nationally ranked #14 Pittsburg State on the road. The game is slated to tip off on Saturday, January 22 at 3:30 pm. Southwest Baptist will be looking to snap a season-high three game losing streak.
